Henna is a plant native to northern Africa and south Asia which produces a red-orange dye molecule that binds to protein and has been used for thousands of years to dye hair, fingernails, and adorn the skin with beautiful designs. In many ancient traditions spanning Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia, the art of henna has accompanied joyful occasions, such as weddings, baby showers, birthdays, and holidays. Henna is regarded as having “Baraka”, meaning “blessing or divine presence,” and is applied to the skin for luck, protection, joy beauty, and fun.

Designs are hand-painted on to the skin as a paste and then left to set for 4 – 12 hours. This will then leave a stain that will fade away as your skin cells die and fall off (usually about 5 – 15 days). It is a wonderfully relaxing and unique experience. Henna is great fun to add to any party and can even be a party in itself. People love it! Where there is henna, there is joy.

If you would love to get a henna tattoo while in St. John, come on over to Maho Bay Camps located up the drive next to Francis Bay beach on the north shore road. I am there on mondays at 5:30 pm and wednesdays at 4:30 pm by the art gallery in the dining pavilion.
